Masterton’s newest café and coffee roastery provides a splash of Central American colour to the Wairarapa. Don Luciano Café is beautifully refurbished, deco-style Chilton Buildings. Owner Marvin Guerrero will be providing Kiwi café food alongside the Central American street food and his very own blend of coffee. Regular Wairarapa café-goers will know Marvin from his stints as maître d’ at Salute in Greytown and Café Medici in Martinborough. With this new venture, Marvin draws on his Honduran heritage to introduce locals to the flavours and verve of his native Central America.
Description
Coffee production and the art of making extraordinary coffee has been a part of Marvin's life since he was very young. His Grandfather and coffee lover, Don Luciano (his cafe’s namesake) was a farmer and grew coffee in La Esperanza, in the Intibucá region of Honduras. This is one of the highest altitudes in Central America – “where the best coffee beans are grown”. Marvin’s training and interest in the beverage and all its flavour subtleties goes back to when he was 5 and learned how to brew coffee on a wood stove. At the age of 21 he lived in Italy where he was absorbed by the coffee culture and the finer ways of producing this popular drink. Through his brand Gracias, Marvin strives to always perfect his single origin and blended coffees. Currently ‘The Don’ named after Marvins Grandfather can be purchased online. Stay tuned for more coffee blends being developed under the Gracias name. Gracias to coffee!! Don Luciano is the home of 'Gracias' Coffee, roasted on site at our cafe with our state-of-the art roasting machine imported from Germany. To produce ‘The Don’s’ special flavour, the beans are carefully selected and roasted to our specifications. So if the thought of a Central American coffee experience sounds intriguing, look out for Don Luciano and the sign of the scarlet macaw among the coffee beans, Honduras’ national bird and the emblem of Gracias coffee. Gracias coffee is available to purchase online. You can buy direct from us, 250gm and 1kg bags of our chocolatey roast beans.
