Blue Penguins Pukekura

Dunedin

Our kaitiaki guardianship of the Blue Penguins Pukekura is a joint venture between the Otago Peninsula Trust and The Korako Karetai Trust. All of our conservation, preservation and restoration work is fully funded by the tour fees. Our values are strongly aligned with the principles of Kaitiaki (guardians of the land and its wildlife) and manaakitanga (care and hospitality of our visitors).

Description

Discover Korora, the Little Blue Penguin, the world's smallest penguin. Enjoy close up viewing of penguins returning from a day at sea within the Takiharuru Pilots Beach nature reserve at dusk. Watch penguins just a few metres from us as they scurry up the beach to their cliff-face burrows. Viewing of the Little Blue Penguins is guaranteed and is an attraction not to be missed when visiting Dunedin, NZ's wildlife capital. This is the only night time blue penguin viewing where photography is allowed.

Blue Penguins Pukekura is a joint venture between the Korako Karetai Trust (this area is of great historical and current significance to the descendants of Korako Karetai) and the Otago Peninsula Trust who agreed to establish an accord to manage the environmental, historical and amenity values of the area known as Takiharuru Pilots Beach at the end of the Otago Peninsula. It's our mission to ensuring the protection and growth of wildlife in this nature reserve while also ensuring visitors get to experience one of natures marvels, often described as an experience of a life time.

Blue Penguins Pukekura tours are hosted by local expert wildlife guides who also share their cultural history and the botany of the area while also sharing biological knowledge of other wildlife seen while on tour (we regularly see seals, sea lions on the beach and seabirds such as albatross flying overhead). and we warmly welcome guests to the area.
